LaraNara is now extended abroad, in an attempt to modify a running course in Sweden to meet needs and conditions in Low/Middle income countries, in Chennai, India.

Eva Brun, one of the initiators of this project:

"In a cooperation between  INCTR (International Network for Cancer Research and Treatment, www.inctr.org) and the Department of Oncology, Lund University Hospital in Sweden we have launched the course “Bascis of Radiophysics and Radiotherapy” for postgraduate doctors at the department of Radiotherapy, Cancer Institute, Chennai, India.

This training course is a translated and modified version of the mandatory course for Swedish residents training in Oncology, running since 8 years. It was started in Chennai in October 2011, on site, with instructions to the 12 involved postgraduates. We also engaged local colleagues in Radiophysics and Radiotherapy to be able to act as  teachers. We can follow the progress of the students on the LaraNara website, cheque their activity-grade and correct examinations. Continuous contact with teachers in Sweden is provided through Internet. The plan is that this first group will finish up by the end of January 2012, and and then evaluate the feasibility f this project.

The majority of patients at the Cancer Institute in Chennai are very poor, without means to pay for cancer treatment and are treated for free. There is little time for lectures and education for the staff, and a lack of senior experts to be involved in teaching. This training course in Chennai is realized without any fundings, and the participating teachers work voluntarily”.
